The Soundcraft Signature 10 is a compact analogue mixer with ten inputs, six of them microphone inputs. It is our most common desk for small events: a conference lectern, wedding speeches with background music, an acoustic duo in a cafe, a school ceremony or a company event for up to a couple of hundred people. One table fits a pair of handheld mics, a wireless receiver, a laptop with music and still a guitar or keyboard. The built-in Lexicon effects add reverb to vocals without an extra box.

The Signature 10 needs active speakers beside it, typically two JBL PRX812 or EON710 on stands, plus XLR cables from the microphones to the desk and from the desk to the speakers. The USB interface records the stereo mix to a computer or plays music from it without a separate sound card. If you need fewer channels and no USB, the Soundcraft EFX8 does the job. If you want to mix from a tablet and record multitrack, take the digital Soundcraft Ui24R.

What to consider when renting

The desk needs mains power and usually sits on a table at the back of the room or beside the stage. Microphones need XLR cables, and the speakers are fed by XLR from the main outputs. Switch on phantom power for condenser microphones and active DI boxes. You can set up the Signature 10 without a technician, but with several performers and wireless microphones do a soundcheck at least an hour before the start.
