The Shure SM58 is a cardioid dynamic handheld, the mic most people picture when they say "microphone". It is our most requested one: band vocals, wedding speeches, birthday toasts, school ceremonies, conference Q&A, karaoke, choir rehearsals and anything else where someone has to speak or sing. The round metal grille protects the capsule from drops and tames breath and plosive sounds. It needs no phantom power and works with any mixer, powered speaker or recorder.
In our range of vocal mics the SM58 is the most forgiving: its cardioid pattern is not too narrow, so even an inexperienced speaker stays audible. The Shure BETA 58A is tighter for loud stages, the Nexadyne 8/S a newer dynamic with a more natural sound, and the KSM9 a condenser for the demanding singer. If you need a switch on the body, take the Shure SM58SE. A small-event kit is an SM58, a K&M 260 stand and a Soundcraft Signature 10 or a JBL powered speaker.
What to consider when renting
Put the mic on a stand with its clip or hand it to the speaker. Speak or sing straight into the grille a few centimetres from the mouth; further away the voice gets thin. Do not cup the grille. XLR cable to the mixer or to a powered speaker's mic input; no phantom power needed. A cardioid hears least from behind, so keep the monitor or speaker behind the mic. No experience needed to set it up.
