What is the difference between the SM58 and SM58SE?

Only the switch. Capsule, sound and grille are identical. The SE suits a presenter who mutes the mic themselves; at a concert with an engineer take the plain SM58 so nobody on stage switches the sound off by accident.

Does the switch click through the speakers?

The switch is quiet and normally produces no audible click. To be sure, switch the mic on before the gain on the mixer is brought up.

The Shure SM58SE is the same cardioid dynamic vocal mic as the SM58, with an on-off switch on the body. It is rented for situations where the presenter mutes the mic and there is no sound engineer: wedding speeches, meetings, school events, churches, the announcer's table at sports events and small conferences. The switch cuts the signal mechanically, so a mic set down on the table does not amplify clinking cups and conversation. No phantom power required.

When an engineer controls the mics at a concert, the plain Shure SM58 is better, because a switched mic gets turned off on stage by accident and cannot be restored from the desk. When the mic passes from hand to hand without a technician, the SM58SE is exactly right. For a loud stage the tighter BETA 58A suits better, and for a demanding singer the KSM9. A good small-event kit is an SM58SE, a K&M 260 stand, a Soundcraft Notepad 12FX and a JBL EON710 powered speaker.

What to consider when renting

Clip it to a stand or hand-hold it. Before the event show the presenter the switch and agree that the mic is only switched off when really needed; the on position is normally up. Speak straight into the grille from close by. XLR cable to the mixer or a powered speaker's mic input; no phantom power. Keep the speaker behind the mic. If the mic seems dead, check the switch first.
