Can I use the vintage U87 at a concert?

No. It is meant for a studio or a quiet room. For stage and outdoor work we suggest the AKG C414 XLII or dynamic microphones.

Do I need to bring anything special?

The essentials come from us: microphone, mount and case. You need a preamp or mixer with phantom power and a stand, both available from our warehouse. Ask if you are not sure what suits your session.

This is an original Neumann U 87 from the 1967 to 1985 production era, a large-diaphragm condenser with three polar patterns: cardioid, omni and figure-eight. It is rented for recording: lead vocals, voice-over, acoustic guitar, brass, piano or a whole ensemble on a single omni mic. The older U 87s are known for a soft, full midrange that newer microphones do not reproduce in quite the same way. It is not meant for stage or outdoor use.

If you need one good large-diaphragm mic for a studio day, the AKG C414 XLII is the more universal and robust choice, and the Sennheiser MKH8040 is a more neutral small-diaphragm option for acoustic instruments. The point of the vintage U87 is its particular character on voice and solo instruments. A Sound Devices MixPre6 MKII recorder or a Yamaha DM3 console with decent preamps does it justice. Tell us where and how you plan to record when ordering.

What to consider when renting

The microphone needs 48 V phantom power and a good XLR cable. Use a stand with a heavy base, such as the K&M 260, and the supplied mount; place a pop filter in front of a singer. Select the polar pattern, pad and low-cut with the switches. This is an old and valuable microphone: keep it dry, never drop it, do not blow into the capsule and move it only in its case. Best set up by an experienced engineer.
