The DPA 4099 is a small condenser microphone that clips directly onto the instrument: violin, cello, saxophone, trumpet, accordion, double bass, drums or the frame of a piano. The CORE Loud SPL version handles loud sources, so brass and percussion are fine too. It is rented for acoustic concerts, theatre, weddings and corporate events with live musicians, wherever a stand in front of the player is impractical. The mic moves with the instrument, so the musician can move freely on stage.

Compared with a stand-mounted Shure SM81 or Sennheiser e914, the 4099 gives a close, consistent sound even when the stage is loud and the player does not stay still. It needs phantom power through its XLR adapter, or connects via an adapter to a Shure bodypack such as the AD1 or QLXD1 to go wireless. Tell us which instrument it is for when ordering and we will pack the right clip.

What to consider when renting

Attach the clip to the instrument and bend the gooseneck so the capsule sits a few centimetres from the sound source: near the f-hole on a violin, near the bell rim on a saxophone. Connect through the XLR adapter to the mixer and switch phantom power on. For wireless use the adapter plugs into the bodypack. Do not kink or pull the cable at the mic. Simple to set up, but worth a demonstration from our technician the first time.
