The AKG C414 XLII is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone we use wherever a single source needs detailed, clear sound: studio vocals and voice recording, acoustic guitar, double bass, grand piano, horns and a drum overhead. Selectable patterns (from omni to figure-eight), a pad switch and a low-cut filter make it a universal tool that fits both a recording session and a concert hall.

If you need a stereo image, take the factory-matched C414 XLII pair. As a stage vocal mic a dynamic Shure SM58 or BETA 58A is better, since the C414 is sensitive and stand-mounted; the C414 is right when the singer stands still and the room is quiet. Compared with the Sennheiser MKH8040, the C414 has a larger diaphragm and a choice of patterns, while the MKH8040 is compact and cardioid only. It needs phantom power and a solid stand.

What to consider when renting

Connect with an XLR cable to an input with phantom power and switch phantom on before opening the channel. Use the included shock mount and a stable stand such as the K&M 210/9. Pick the pattern for the source: cardioid for general use, omni for a room, figure-eight for two facing sources. Engage the pad for a loud source. A windscreen and pop filter are needed for vocals.
