Is the BETA 58A better than the SM58?

It is different rather than simply better. On a loud stage with monitors the BETA 58A gives more headroom against feedback and a brighter sound. In a quiet hall or for a speaker the SM58 is more forgiving and cheaper.

Is the same mic available wireless?

Yes. The same BETA 58A capsule is on our Shure SLXD, QLXD and Axient Digital handheld transmitters. If you need wireless, look at the wireless microphones category or ask us.

The Shure BETA 58A is a supercardioid dynamic handheld for singers, the tighter and brighter development of the SM58. It is rented for band concerts, club nights, choir soloists, wedding bands and any stage where the singer stands in front of loud monitors. Supercardioid means the mic hears less from the sides, so the monitors can go louder before feedback starts. No phantom power needed and it works with any mixer.

Our range of vocal mics: the Shure SM58 is cardioid and more forgiving if the singer's mic technique is uncertain; the BETA 58A is tighter and brighter; the Shure Nexadyne 8/S is the newest dynamic with even cleaner side rejection; the Shure KSM9 is a condenser with the most detailed sound, but needs phantom power. The Telefunken M80 is also supercardioid and bright. A K&M 260 stand and a Yamaha DM3 mixer complete the set.

What to consider when renting

Put the mic on a stand with its clip or hand it to the singer. Sing straight into the grille a few centimetres away and do not cup the grille with your palm; it ruins the pattern and causes feedback. With a supercardioid, place the monitor at roughly 45 degrees to the mic rather than directly behind. Connect with an XLR cable; phantom power is not needed. Simple and reliable, no technician required.
