Does the D12VR need phantom power?

Not necessarily. Without phantom it works as a passive dynamic microphone and sounds good. Phantom power enables the three selectable filters, which is an extra option rather than a requirement.

Should I choose the D12VR or the BETA 52A?

For a fast, punchy kick at a rock or pop show, take the BETA 52A or Nexadyne 2. For jazz, soul or recording where you want a softer, fuller drum, take the D12VR. If unsure, ask us and we will describe the difference in more detail.

The AKG D12VR is a large-diaphragm dynamic microphone built mainly for kick drum. Customers rent it for band shows, club nights and recording sessions where they want a rounder, fuller kick sound than a typical modern kick mic gives. It also works well in front of a bass guitar amp and on large percussion. Without phantom power it runs as a passive dynamic mic; with 48 V phantom applied, three switchable filters become active, voiced for an open, closed or ported front head.

Among the kick drum mics in our stock, the Shure BETA 52A and Shure Nexadyne 2 give the sharpest, most modern attack, the AKG D112 MKII sits in the middle, and the D12VR has the roundest, most old-school character. It is often combined with a Shure BETA 91A lying inside the drum for click, while the D12VR sits at the port hole and provides body. The rest of the drum mic set, stands and a mixer can go on the same order.

What to consider when renting

Mount it on a short stand such as the K&M 259/1 and aim it at the port hole, roughly a hand's width from the head. Run an XLR cable to the mixer. Without phantom power it behaves like any dynamic mic. If you switch phantom on for that channel, you can choose between the three filters: listen to each one and keep whichever suits the drum best. Setup is straightforward and fine for an amateur band.
