Is the pair really matched, or just two of the same model?

A factory-matched pair, which we store and rent together. If you simply need two microphones for different sources, order two single C414 XLII.

Is it suitable for live reinforcement on stage?

For choir, piano and orchestra yes, provided the wedges are modest and the engineer knows what they are doing. On a loud rock stage a large-diaphragm condenser is too sensitive and a dynamic or small-diaphragm mic is the better choice.

The AKG C414 XLII pair is two factory-matched large-diaphragm condenser microphones that we rent for stereo recording and for reinforcing a choir or piano. Several pickup patterns are selectable, from omni to figure-eight, so the same pair can be set up as XY, AB or mid-side. Typical rentals: concert recording, choir and chamber orchestra, grand piano, a drum overhead pair, an acoustic ensemble.

A pair makes sense when you need a true stereo image; for one source a single C414 XLII is enough. Compared with the Sennheiser MKH8040 stereo pair, the C414 has a large diaphragm and a choice of patterns, while the MKH8040 is a small cardioid that fits tighter spots and outdoor work. For recording, a Sound Devices MixPre6 MKII or a console with Dante output goes well with it; the microphones need phantom power.

What to consider when renting

Both microphones need phantom power and inputs with good preamps. A pair needs two stands or one stereo bar; shock mounts are included. Select the same pattern on both and keep the placement symmetrical for a stable stereo image. For tall sources (choir, orchestra) ask for tall stands. The mics are sensitive, so protect them from rain, wind and drops; outdoors they need windscreens.
