The RME Digiface Dante is a USB audio interface that brings Dante network channels into a computer and back out, up to 256 channels in total. We rent it for multitrack recording at concerts and conferences, for virtual soundchecks and for playing multichannel playback from a computer. The typical renter is a sound engineer or production company with a Dante console such as the Yamaha DM3, QL1 or DM7 who wants the whole show recorded track by track.

The unit needs a Dante network: a network cable from the switch that the console or a Yamaha RIO rack is connected to, and a computer with the RME driver and Dante Controller installed, where signals are routed to channels. Recording software is the renter's own. If you only need the stereo mix, the console's own USB output or a Soundcraft Ui24R is enough; the Digiface Dante makes sense when there are dozens of channels. Shure SLXD4QDAN wireless receivers can join the same network.

What to consider when renting

You need a laptop with the RME driver and Dante Controller installed beforehand, and a network cable into the Dante switch. All devices must run at the same sample rate and one of them must be the clock master; the engineer sets this on the console. Tracks are routed in Dante Controller and recording happens in the renter's software. Make a test recording before the event starts and check the free disk space.
