Theatre and musical headset mic kit (4 performers)
This kit is for a production where four performers need their hands free and their voices must reach the audience even in a quiet scene. Each wears a Shure DH5 headset microphone, hooked behind the ear and reaching onto the cheek, and an SLXD1 bodypack transmitter under the costume. The four signals arrive at one SLXD4Q receiver and go on to the mixer. It suits school theatre, an amateur troupe, a musical course's final show or a play at a company event. No sound system or mixer is included; the hall needs a PA, or you rent one separately.
In theatre, a wireless microphone's enemies are sweat, costume and movement. The DH5 resists moisture and is tiny, so it stays on through a dance scene and is discreet from the front row. The transmitter goes on a belt or in a pouch, cable running up under the costume. Two directional antennas either side of the stage keep the signal even when a performer turns away or is in the wings; the UA844+ distributor feeds the receiver. During the show someone at the mixer opens each microphone when its performer is on and closes it when they are off.

Why these items
- 1.The Shure SLXD4QDAN four-channel receiver takes the four performers' signals in one unit and gives each one separately to the mixer, by XLR cable or over a Dante network.
- 2.Four Shure SLXD1 bodypack transmitters are small and clip to a belt or costume; one per performer, because a transmitter is not handed from one person to another during a show.
- 3.Four Shure DH5T/O-MTQG headset microphones are moisture-resistant, tiny and omnidirectional, which means they tolerate sweat and sound even when the performer turns their head.
- 4.The Shure UA844+ antenna distributor powers the active antennas and passes their signal to the receiver, so the antennas can go at the edge of the stage rather than by the mixer at the back of the hall.
- 5.Two Shure UA874WB active directional antennas on either side of the stage give solid reception across the whole stage, including the wings, where an ordinary whip antenna can lose the signal.
Setup and preparation
The receiver and distributor stand by the mixer or at the side of the stage; the antennas go on stands either side of the stage, above the audience, aimed at the stage. The headset sits behind the performer's ear with the capsule on the cheek near the corner of the mouth, not in front of it, and the cable is taped at the back of the neck. The transmitter goes on a belt or in a costume pouch with the display facing out, so it can be checked during breaks.
On the company's side you need a mixer and speakers, two stands for the antennas, batteries for the transmitters, tape for fixing the microphones and someone who opens and closes the microphones during the show. We recommend one rehearsal with the microphones before opening night so the performers get used to them and the fitting settles. Our technician can come to install the system and fit the microphones on the performers; this is arranged separately.

When to choose another kit
If there are more than four performers, add SLXD1 transmitters and DH5 microphones plus a second receiver; we plan the frequencies. If the show is in a hall without a sound system, add the Conference kit for up to 300 people, whose mixer and speakers will cover a play as well, or ask us for a PA suited to theatre. If you need two headsets, for instance for a moderator and a presenter, the Shure SLXD14D with two transmitters is cheaper.
