In-ear monitor kit for four musicians
This kit is for a four-piece band or four performers who want to swap stage wedges for earphones. Four Shure PSM900 systems give each musician their own stereo monitor mix, which travels by radio from a transmitter to the receiver on their belt and from there into SE215 earphones. The stage gets quieter, the microphones pick up less sound bouncing back from the room, and everyone hears exactly what they want to hear. The kit does not include a mixer or a PA; it is an addition to an existing sound system that has enough spare outputs.
How it works: the engineer builds a separate monitor mix for each musician on the mixer and sends it to that musician's PSM900 transmitter. The four transmitters feed the PA421B antenna combiner, which merges their signals and sends them to the stage through one HA-8091 directional antenna, so the transmitters do not interfere with each other and there is one antenna on stage, not four. The belt-worn P9RA+ receiver locks onto its channel and has its own volume knob and earphones. Most of the day goes into building mixes at soundcheck; during the show the musicians only adjust volume.

Why these items
- 1.Four Shure PSM900 systems, each with a P9T transmitter and a P9RA+ receiver, give four musicians separate stereo mixes, because one shared monitor mix never satisfies everyone at once.
- 2.The Shure PA421B antenna combiner takes the outputs of four transmitters and merges them into one antenna, so the transmitters do not interfere with each other and the stage is not cluttered with antennas.
- 3.The Shure HA-8091 directional antenna is aimed at the stage and gives the receivers a steadier signal than the whip antennas on the back of the transmitters, especially when the transmitters are in a rack by the mixer.
- 4.Four Shure SE215CL earphones are sound-isolating in-ears that keep stage noise out, so the musician does not have to turn the mix up too loud.
Setup and preparation
The transmitters and the combiner go in one place, usually in a rack next to the mixer or at the side of the stage; the antenna goes on a microphone stand and is aimed at the stage so there are no walls or metal between it and the musicians. From the mixer come four stereo mixes, which means eight aux outputs, or four mono mixes if there are fewer outputs. The receivers clip onto belts, the earphones are plugged in and each receiver is set to its channel before rehearsal.
On your side you need a mixer with enough aux or bus outputs, a sound engineer who builds the mixes at soundcheck, a stand for the antenna and batteries for the receivers, which run on AA cells. If the band has not played with in-ear monitors before, allow more time for soundcheck than usual. On request our technician sets the frequencies, antenna and mixes on site; this is ordered separately.

When to choose another kit
If the band has more than four people, add PSM900 systems and earphones from the catalogue; the PA421B combiner serves four transmitters, a fifth and sixth need a second combiner, so ask us. If only one or two musicians need in-ears, for example the drummer for a click track, rent single PSM900 systems without the combiner and antenna. If there is no sound system yet, start from the Live band kit for up to 200 people and add this kit to it.
