The Telefunken M80 is a supercardioid dynamic handheld for singers, known for its open, bright top end; many describe it as a dynamic that sounds like a condenser. It is rented for lead singers in rock, metal and pop bands who want a mic that cuts through a loud band without adding treble at the desk. It also works on snare and percussion. No phantom power needed; it connects with a normal XLR cable.

Next to the Shure SM58 and BETA 58A, the M80 is brighter and tighter, which suits a singer whose voice tends to sound dull, but less so a voice that is already sharp. The Shure Nexadyne 8/S is a newer, more natural-sounding alternative, and the KSM9 a condenser that needs phantom power. Because the M80 is dynamic, it takes stage work and the occasional drop. A K&M 260 stand and a Soundcraft Ui24R or Yamaha DM3 mixer complete the set.

What to consider when renting

Clip it to a stand or hand it to the singer. Sing close and straight into the grille; do not cup the grille. As with any supercardioid, put the monitor at an angle to the mic, not straight behind it. XLR cable to the mixer, no phantom power. Since the mic is bright by nature, start with a flat EQ and cut highs rather than add them. Easy to set up, no technician needed.
