Do all eight listeners hear the same thing?

By default yes, the common input goes to everyone and each person adjusts only their own volume. For different mixes, channels can be given their own input, but then the console also needs that many outputs.

How long can the headphone cables be?

In a rehearsal room ordinary headphone extensions; on stage we recommend a P9HW pack on the musician's belt and a longer cable between amplifier and pack. Tell us the distances and we will include the cables.

The TASCAM MH-8 is a rack-mount eight-channel headphone amplifier: one stereo signal becomes eight headphone outputs with individual volume, and each channel can take its own input if needed. We rent it for rehearsal rooms and recording sessions where the whole band listens on headphones, for simultaneous interpretation and listening corners at events, and for distributing wired in-ear monitoring to a stage where the musicians stay in place.

Compared with a wireless PSM system the MH-8 is simpler and cheaper and needs neither frequencies nor batteries, but a cable runs to every musician. A good combination is the MH-8 with Shure P9HW wired packs and SE215CL earphones: the amplifier distributes the mixes and the pack puts a volume knob within the musician's reach. A Yamaha DM3 or Soundcraft Ui24R with its aux outputs makes a suitable console.

What to consider when renting

The amplifier needs mains power and a signal from a console aux or main output; eight listeners need eight headphones and extension cables, ordered from us separately. Turn each channel's volume down before anyone puts headphones on. If different listeners need different mixes, some channels can be fed from separate inputs; tell us how many different mixes you have and we will say whether the MH-8 can handle it.
