Can the VP89M be used indoors for dialogue?

Yes, if the room is quiet and not too reverberant. In general the short MKH 416 is better indoors, because a long tube emphasises room reflections. For outdoor work the VP89M with its windshield is the stronger choice.

What is in the Rycote kit?

A windshield kit for the microphone that protects against wind and handling noise. The exact contents, and whether you need a boompole or stand, are agreed when you order.

The Shure VP89M is a medium-length modular shotgun microphone that we rent with a Rycote windshield kit. The medium tube gives a narrower pattern than a short shotgun, so it suits picking up a source from further away: sports broadcast from the sideline, nature documentaries, outdoor concerts, conference halls where the mic must stay out of frame, and street interviews. Requires phantom power. The body has a low-cut switch against wind and traffic rumble.

The Sennheiser MKH 416 is our other shotgun: short, the standard for boomed dialogue and better indoors, where a long tube struggles with room reflections. The VP89M is chosen for outdoor work and more distant sources, where the included windshield is needed right away. Pair it with a K-Tek Airo boompole and a Sound Devices MixPre6 MKII or TASCAM FR-AV2 recorder. On top of a camera the VP89M is long; put it on a boom or a stand instead.

What to consider when renting

Switch 48 V phantom power on at the recorder or mixer. Fit the mic in the Rycote shock mount and windshield, attach it to a boompole or stand and aim it precisely at the source; a medium shotgun is narrow and a few degrees off is audible. Indoors remove the fur cover but keep the shock mount. XLR cable. Never pack the fur cover away wet; let it dry. An experienced sound recordist is recommended.
