The K-Tek Airo Boompole 1 is a four-section aluminium microphone boom for film and video sound, extending from 98 to 330 cm. It is internally cabled with XLR connectors, so the microphone lead does not hang around the pole or rustle during a take. It is rented with a shotgun microphone for recording dialogue in interviews, documentaries, short films and commercial shoots, where the mic has to sit just outside the frame as close to the speaker as possible.

The boompole is normally one part of a sound kit: a Sennheiser MKH 416 or Shure VP89M shotgun, a shock mount and windshield, and a Sound Devices MixPre-6 II or two-channel TASCAM FR-AV2 as the recorder. If the speaker stays put and a mic in shot is acceptable, a regular stand will do, but with a moving camera and several speakers the boom is the only sensible choice. Confirm shock mount and windshield compatibility when ordering.

What to consider when renting

The tip has the standard 3/8-inch thread for a shock mount, and the internal cable's XLR ends exit at both ends of the pole; you only need a short XLR cable to the recorder or camera. Lock the sections before the take so the pole does not slip while rolling. Holding a boom all day is physical work; an experienced sound technician for the shoot can be quoted separately.
