Is a windshield included?

The basic kit is the microphone. If you are shooting outdoors, note in your order that you need a windshield and shock mount and we will agree what goes in the kit.

Can I mount the MKH 416 on my camera?

It can be mounted on a camera, but it does its best work close to the actor on a boom. On top of a camera several metres away the sound becomes roomy. Ask us if you need something better suited to camera mounting.

The Sennheiser MKH 416 is a short shotgun microphone used in film and television sound to capture dialogue from a boom. It is rented for short films, commercials, documentaries, interviews and voice-over sessions. Its RF condenser design keeps it working reliably in damp and cold weather, which matters on Estonian location shoots. Beyond the set it is a popular voice-over mic, placed above the speaker's head and angled towards the mouth.

We also stock the Shure VP89M, a medium-length shotgun that comes with a Rycote windshield kit. The VP89M reaches further and suits sport, nature sound and outdoor events where the mic is some distance from the source. The MKH 416 is the better choice indoors for dialogue and anywhere a boom operator can bring the mic close to the actor. It is usually rented together with a K-Tek boompole and a Sound Devices MixPre6 or TASCAM FR-AV2 recorder.

What to consider when renting

The microphone needs 48 V phantom power from the recorder, camera or mixer. Fit it in a shock mount on the end of a boompole, such as the K-Tek Airo Boompole, and aim it at the speaker's mouth from above or below, just outside the frame. Outdoors a windshield is essential; indoors foam is enough. The cable is XLR. Boom work takes practice; without a sound recordist it can also go on a stand above the speaker.
