Is the SM35 fine for speech only?

Yes, especially in a noisy room or a gym where an omni headset would pick up the surroundings. At a quiet conference the MX153 is more discreet and more comfortable.

Why pick a headset over a handheld?

If the performer plays an instrument, trains a class or needs both hands, there is no choice. The level also stays consistent because the mic is always the same distance from the mouth. For pure sound, a good handheld is still fuller.

The SM35 is Shure's cardioid condenser headset for singers and players who need their hands free. A sturdy frame goes over the head with the capsule on a flexible boom in front of the mouth. We rent it to drummers and keyboard players who sing backing vocals, to guitarists, to fitness instructors and hosts in loud rooms, and to dance teachers who talk over music. The cardioid capsule takes sound from the front and keeps stage noise from the sides and rear quieter.

The plug is TA4F, so it fits the Shure bodypacks SLXD1, QLXD1 and AD1, ordered separately or as a kit. Choosing among our headsets is simple: if the performer only speaks and the stage is quiet, take the lighter and less visible MX153 or DH5T; if they sing next to loud wedges or a drum kit, the SM35 is the only one of the three that keeps feedback under control. Compared with a handheld, the level stays steadier because the distance to the mouth never changes.

What to consider when renting

The cardioid capsule has to sit near the corner of the mouth and point at it; if the boom shifts, the sound changes, so fit the frame properly and recheck the position after every break. Use the supplied windscreen, a singer's breath is loud at this distance. Transmitter on the belt, antenna free, battery check before going on. Matching transmitters and receivers are ordered separately; for several headsets we coordinate frequencies.
