Is the KSM8 better than a BETA 58A?

Different rather than simply better. The BETA 58A is familiar and dependable; the KSM8 sounds more open and has less proximity effect, meaning less bass build-up when the singer is right on the mic. Some vocalists prefer exactly that, others stay with the BETA 58A.

Can I put this capsule on our own transmitter?

If it is a Shure handheld with an interchangeable head, yes. Tell us the model and we will check before confirming the order.

The RPW 174 is Shure's black KSM8 capsule for wireless handhelds: a dynamic Dualdyne design with two diaphragms that keeps the sound even however close the singer holds the mic. We rent it to bands, clubs and festivals where the vocalist moves, swinging between lips and arm's length, and the engineer wants a channel that needs no chasing with EQ.

It screws onto the AD2, ADX2, QLXD2 and SLXD2 handhelds, which we stock with BETA 58A, SM58 or KSM11 heads. Choose the KSM8 when the BETA 58A is too sharp but the KSM9 (RPW 184) and KSM11 (RPW 192) condensers feed back or rattle. The pattern is fixed cardioid, and on a loud rock stage it is the safer pick.

What to consider when renting

Screw the capsule fully onto the transmitter and check the grille does not rattle. Power comes from the transmitter; there is nothing to configure on the head itself. A dynamic capsule gives less output than a condenser, so revisit transmitter gain at soundcheck. Transmitter and receiver are ordered separately; if you like, we assemble the system and coordinate frequencies before handover so that on stage you only switch it on.
