The Shure Nexadyne 6 is a supercardioid dynamic microphone for toms and snare, the drum member of the Nexadyne series. Its dual-transducer Revonic construction gives an even supercardioid pattern that keeps cymbals and neighbouring drums out of the channel better than a standard cardioid tom mic. It is rented to mike a full drum kit in clubs, at festivals and in recording, usually two or three for toms and one for snare. No phantom power required.

The direct comparison is the Sennheiser e904: compact, cardioid, rim-clipped and cheaper. The Nexadyne 6 is chosen for loud stages where cymbal bleed in the tom channels is a problem, and for recording where channels must be clean. For snare a Shure SM57 or BETA 57A on a stand also works, and the BETA98AMP/C for condenser detail. A logical set is Nexadyne 2 on kick, Nexadyne 6 on toms and SM81 overheads, all into a Yamaha DM3.

What to consider when renting

Mount the mic on a stand such as the K&M 252, or on a rim clip if supplied, and aim the capsule at the head from two or three fingers away, inside the rim and clear of the stick path. The supercardioid is narrow, so point it precisely at the drum, not the cymbal. XLR to the mixer, phantom power not required. Start with a flat EQ at the mixer. A drummer can set it up.

Best for

  • Toms on a loud stage
  • Snare with a tight pattern
  • Drum recording with little bleed
  • Shure Nexadyne drum set
