The Shure MV88+ is a small stereo condenser microphone that plugs straight into a smartphone and is meant for recording video and audio without a separate recorder. The Video Kit includes the microphone, a small tabletop tripod, a phone mount and a windscreen. It is mostly rented for interviews, vlogs, social media clips and small press events where you need noticeably better sound than the phone's built-in microphone but do not want to carry a full camera rig.

Compared with the RØDE Wireless GO II, which gives the speaker a wireless transmitter, the MV88+ records from the camera position, so it suits situations where the phone is close to the speaker or you are capturing ambience and music. If you need two XLR microphones and separate files, look at the TASCAM FR-AV2 recorder instead. The MV88+ is the simplest choice when the whole workflow stays on the phone and the edit is done on the same device.

What to consider when renting

The microphone is powered by the phone and needs no battery of its own. Tell us when ordering whether your phone has a USB-C or Lightning port so the right cable comes along. The tripod and mount are in the kit, so no separate stand is needed. Do a couple of test takes in the Shure MOTIV app before the event and fit the windscreen when going outdoors. Any user can set it up alone.
