The Shure BETA98AMP/C is a miniature cardioid condenser microphone for toms and snare that clamps to the drum rim on its flexible gooseneck. The built-in preamp ends in a regular XLR connector, so it plugs in like any other mic. As a condenser it gives toms more attack and detail than a dynamic mic, and it tolerates very loud hits. It is rented for larger stages, television and recording where drums must sound polished and the stage must stay clear of stands.

The dynamic clip-on alternatives are the Sennheiser e904 and Shure Nexadyne 6: cheaper, no phantom power and tougher on stage, but duller on top. The BETA98AMP/C is chosen when you want condenser clarity and fast response from the toms. It fits a set with the Shure BETA 52A and BETA 91A on kick and SM81 overheads; all the condensers need phantom power, which a Yamaha QL1 supplies to each channel individually.

What to consider when renting

Enable 48 V phantom power on the channel first. Clamp the mount to the drum rim and bend the gooseneck so the capsule looks at the head from two or three fingers away, clear of the sticks. XLR cable from the preamp to the desk; strap the cable to a drum leg so it does not pull. Avoid bending the gooseneck sharply at the same point. Placement is simple, but dialling it in at the mixer needs an experienced hand.
