Does the 55SH also sound old-fashioned?

No, the sound is a modern, clear dynamic vocal mic, slightly warmer than an SM58. The retro part is the look, not the audio.

Is there a wireless version of the 55SH?

The 55SH is a wired microphone. If you need the retro look without a cable, ask us; sometimes a solution is possible, but the standard kit is XLR cable only.

The Shure 55SH Series II is a dynamic cardioid vocal microphone with the classic 1950s look, still manufactured and ready for a working day. It is rented mostly for its appearance: rockabilly and swing bands, retro-themed weddings and company parties, theatre productions, photo shoots, music videos and a master of ceremonies' lectern, wherever the mic has to be part of the picture. It has a built-in on-off switch and a swivel that mounts straight onto the stand, so no clip is needed.

In sound it is an ordinary dynamic vocal mic, warm rather than bright, and it works with any mixer without phantom power. If looks do not matter, the Shure SM58 or BETA 58A is cheaper, lighter and more feedback-resistant; the 55SH stays on its stand and is not carried in the hand. Its most natural partners are a tall round-base stand such as the K&M 260 and a small mixer like the Soundcraft Signature 10 for a retro party or a small stage.

What to consider when renting

Screw the mic straight onto the stand thread, for example the K&M 260, and tilt the swivel towards the singer's mouth. Sing close and directly into it, as it does not pick up well from the sides. XLR cable to the mixer, no phantom power needed. Check that the body switch is on before the performance. Place monitors behind the mic, not beside it. Setup is easy and needs no technician.
