Does the e902 need a clip or holder?

No. The stand mount is built into the microphone; you screw it directly onto the stand thread and adjust the angle at the joint.

They are close in sound and both are safe choices. If your other drum mics are Sennheiser, take the e902; if Shure, take the BETA 52A. For tighter side rejection on a loud stage, look at the Nexadyne 2.

The Sennheiser e902 is a dynamic cardioid microphone for kick drum and bass guitar amps. It is the workhorse of the evolution series and is rented for band rehearsals, club gigs, school events and small festivals where a drum kit needs to be miked quickly and reliably. The mic has an integrated stand mount with a swivel joint, so no separate clip is needed and it stays put even when the drummer's foot catches it. It works without phantom power.

Among kick mics the e902 is close to the Shure BETA 52A: both deliver solid lows and a clear attack. The Shure Nexadyne 2 is a newer supercardioid option with better side rejection, the AKG D112 MKII is rounder and the AKG D12VR more old-school. If the rest of the kit is Sennheiser, it is logical to take the e902 with e904 tom mics and e914 overheads. A full drum kit needs at least eight channels, for example on the Soundcraft Ui24R.

What to consider when renting

Screw the mic straight onto a short stand such as the K&M 259/1; the swivel joint sets the angle. Place the capsule in the port hole or just in front of it, aimed at the beater. In front of a bass amp put it near the edge of the speaker cone. XLR cable to the mixer; phantom power is not needed and does no harm. Setup is simple and suitable for a band doing its own sound.
