Can I plug the BETA 98H/C straight into a mixer's XLR input?

Not without a preamp. The TA4F version is made for a Shure transmitter; for cabled use we add a TA4F-to-XLR adapter that runs on phantom power. Tell us which variant you need when ordering.

How many of these fit in one wireless system?

As many as you have receiver channels: each mic needs its own transmitter and channel. For a larger horn section we draw up a frequency plan and suggest a four-channel receiver.

The BETA 98H/C is Shure's miniature cardioid condenser on a flexible gooseneck with a clamp that grips a horn bell or a drum rim. Our version has a TA4F plug that goes straight into a Shure bodypack transmitter. Typical rentals: saxophones and trumpets in a big band or wind orchestra, toms on a rock stage, and wireless horn players who want to roam the stage or walk into the audience.

For wireless use the 98H/C pairs with a QLXD1, SLXD1 or AD1 bodypack, ordered separately or as a kit. For a cabled run to the desk it needs a TA4F-to-XLR preamp, so ask for one when ordering. Choosing between the DPA 4099 and the 98H/C: the 4099 sounds more refined and offers more clips (strings, accordion), the 98H/C is the sturdy, cheaper choice for brass and drums where the clamp has to take a knock. For permanently miking a drum kit, look at the Shure BETA98AMP/C as well.

What to consider when renting

The mic takes power from the transmitter or preamp; it does not plug straight into XLR. On a horn, aim the capsule at the rim of the bell rather than straight in, for a smoother tone and less wind blast. On a drum, clamp it to the hoop and keep the capsule a few centimetres above the head, away from the stick. Each transmitter needs its own receiver channel and fresh batteries; we coordinate frequencies before handover.
