The Shure AD2/K9N is the Axient Digital handheld with the KSM9 condenser capsule in a nickel finish. The KSM9's pickup pattern switches between cardioid and supercardioid, so the microphone can be adapted to the stage. We rent it to vocalists and performers who want a condenser sound and still some flexibility against feedback.

It needs an AD4D, AD4Q or ADX5D receiver. The AD2/K11 in the same series has the newer KSM11 capsule, cardioid only; the choice between them often comes down to the voice, so ask if you want to compare. The dynamic AD2/B58 and AD2/SM58 are simpler on a loud stage. The nickel finish reads bright on stage and on camera.

What to consider when renting

Order the receiver and batteries separately. The pattern switch is under the capsule; set it before the soundcheck: supercardioid gives more separation from monitors, cardioid is more forgiving of hand position. Gain is set on the transmitter with the engineer. Power from AA batteries or a Shure rechargeable, sync by infrared.
