The Shure 520DX, known as the Green Bullet, is a microphone made specifically for harmonica. It is held in the hands together with the harp so the palms cup both, producing the thick, slightly overdriven Chicago blues tone. It is rented for blues and rock band gigs, jam sessions, the harmonica player in a wedding band and recording. A volume knob on the body lets the player control the level.

Unlike every other microphone we rent, the 520DX has a high-impedance 6.3 mm jack output rather than XLR. The usual route is into a guitar or harp amplifier, which in turn is miked with a Shure SM57 or Sennheiser e906. Going straight into a mixer requires a DI box such as the BSS AR-133. If the harmonica player prefers a clean, unamplified sound, an ordinary Shure SM58 or SM57 is the better and simpler option.

What to consider when renting

Connect the mic with a jack cable to a guitar or harp amplifier and set the mic's volume knob around halfway to leave headroom against feedback. Mike the amp with an SM57 or e906. For a direct feed to the mixer use a DI box, because the output is high impedance and the signal is hot. No phantom power needed. Cup the mic tightly in your hands; that is the secret of the sound. The player can do this alone.

Best for

  • Blues harmonica through an amp
  • Rock and blues band gigs
  • Jam sessions and club nights
  • Recording harmonica with an overdriven tone
