The Sennheiser e906 is a flat supercardioid dynamic microphone designed for guitar amplifiers. Its flat body lets it hang by its cable over the edge of the amp, straight in front of the speaker, with no stand. It is rented for rock and blues gigs, band rehearsals and recording, and also for snare and percussion. A three-position switch on the body boosts or softens the upper midrange to suit the amp and the style of music.

The classic alternative on a guitar cab is a Shure SM57 or BETA 57A on a stand; the e906's advantage is speed of setup and one less stand on stage. If the guitarist plays at different volumes or swaps amps, the presence switch is handy. On toms and snare it competes with the e904 and Nexadyne 6, but it has no rim clip. The mic needs no phantom power and connects to any mixer, such as the Soundcraft Ui24R.

What to consider when renting

Hang the mic by its XLR cable over the top of the amp so the capsule sits in front of the grille between the centre and the edge of the speaker; tape the cable to the amp if needed. On a stand use a normal clip, for example on the K&M 252. Try the three presence settings and keep the best. No phantom power needed. The easiest guitar mic to set up, fine for the guitarist to do.
