Can I play without rekordbox, just MP3 files on a stick?

Yes, the player reads ordinary audio files without analysis, but waveforms and cue points only work properly from a stick prepared in rekordbox.

How many players do I need?

A normal set needs two. Three or four are ordered when the DJ asks for it in the rider or several DJs hand over without a break.

The Pioneer CDJ-3000 is Pioneer's flagship DJ player and has become the usual equipment in clubs and at festivals. Despite the name it has no disc drive: music comes from a USB stick or SD card prepared in rekordbox, and the large touchscreen is used to browse tracks and work with hot cues. It is mostly rented in pairs together with the DJM-A9 mixer when a DJ rider calls for a Pioneer setup.

Two CDJ-3000s and a DJM-A9 is the combination most professional DJs build their sets on; players linked by LAN cable share one USB stick and see each other's tracks. If the DJ plays vinyl, add Technics SL-1210MK7 turntables, and if they play from a controller, CDJs are not needed. The players need a solid table; the Gravity FT 01 is wide enough for two CDJs and the mixer.

What to consider when renting

Each player needs mains power, an RCA cable to the mixer and a LAN cable for Pro DJ Link; with the DJM-A9 the network runs through the mixer, with other mixers a small network switch is needed. The DJ brings music on a USB stick exported from rekordbox; check compatibility before the event. The players need a stable table and a speaker system, ordered separately. Our technician usually does the hookup.
