Do I need the calibrator for every measurement?

If you want absolute SPL values, yes, calibrate before every session, because the interface input gain may change. For relative measurements it is not needed.

Can I rent the SC-1 without a microphone?

Yes, if you have your own measurement microphone. Check that the capsule diameter matches the calibrator opening; if in doubt, ask us.

The iSEMcon SC-1 is an acoustic calibrator: a small battery-powered device that produces a reference tone of known level at the microphone capsule. It is used to match the reading in your measurement software to the real sound pressure, so the SPL values you see on screen can be trusted. It is almost always rented with a measurement microphone when the sound level at an event has to be documented or the system tuning needs absolute levels.

If you only need relative measurements, such as delay alignment or an EQ curve, the EMX-7150 works without a calibrator. If sound pressure has to be measured against a limit, for example at a festival or indoors to comply with noise rules, the SC-1 is a mandatory addition. The calibrator fits our EMX-7150 microphone; for other microphones, ask about compatibility before ordering.

What to consider when renting

The calibrator runs on a battery and needs nothing besides the microphone it is placed on. Calibrate before measuring: slide the calibrator carefully onto the microphone capsule, switch the tone on and set the level in the measurement software to match. Then remove it and start measuring. Keep it in its case during transport, it is a precision instrument. Using it is simple, but assumes you know your measurement software.
