Can I connect stereo devices as well?

Yes, a stereo source simply takes two channels, left and right. Eight channels therefore cover four stereo devices.

Does the PAN-16 work without a rack?

It does; you can just put it on a table or a case. A rack makes transport and cable management easier.

The Palmer PAN-16 is an eight-channel passive DI box in a 19-inch rack housing. Each channel takes a jack input and provides a balanced XLR output, a thru connection and a ground lift. It is rented when a stage or studio has many line-level sources at once: a rig of keyboards and samplers, drum electronics, backing track players, the output of a DJ mixer or an act performing from several laptops.

One rack unit replaces eight separate boxes and a tangle of cables on stage, so it usually goes out with a larger digital console such as the Yamaha QL1 or DM7 and a Rio stage box. Passive means no power is needed, but for passive bass guitars and piezo pickups the active BSS AR-133 is the better fit. If you only need two channels, a Palmer PAN-04A or Radial ProAV2 will do.

What to consider when renting

Mount the PAN-16 in the stage rack or place it on stage near the keyboards so the jack cables stay short. Each channel's XLR output runs on its own cable to the stage box or multicore; count those cables when ordering. No power or phantom is required. If a channel hums, use that channel's ground lift switch. We recommend a technician who knows the channel list for the hookup.
