Does it work for a computer?

Yes, if the computer has a jack output or you use an adapter. A cleaner and simpler connection, though, comes from the Radial USB-Pro or Palmer PLI 04 USB, which take audio straight from USB.

Will phantom power damage my keyboard?

No, phantom power stays on the XLR side of the DI box and never reaches the instrument's jack inputs. This is the normal way a DI is used.

The Palmer PAN-04A is an active two-channel DI box suited to stereo sources: keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines, a laptop or the line output of a DJ controller. The two channels are independent, so it can also serve two mono instruments. The active circuit preserves the top end of high-impedance sources, and the box is powered from the mixer's phantom supply or a battery.

Choose the PAN-04A when a stereo device connects with jack cables and the signal has to travel a long way from stage to mixer. If the source is a phone or a computer headphone output, the Radial ProAV2 or Palmer PLI-04 is more convenient, as they also have 3.5 mm and RCA inputs. For a computer, a USB box such as the Radial USB-Pro gives the best result because the analogue output is bypassed. For a single mono instrument the BSS AR-133 is simpler and sufficient.

What to consider when renting

Connect the device's left and right outputs with jack cables to the two inputs and run two XLR cables to two microphone channels on the mixer, panned left and right. Switch phantom power on for those channels or use the battery. Check the channel order, otherwise the sides swap. No technician is needed for the hookup; if it hums, try the ground lift.
