The Palmer PDIR01 is a reverse DI box that does the opposite of a normal DI: it takes a balanced XLR signal and outputs an unbalanced jack signal. You need it when a mixer or stage box output has to feed a device that only has a jack or consumer-level input: a guitar or keyboard amp, an active speaker with a jack input, a camera, a video switcher or the line input of a recorder.
A typical case is sending a monitor feed into a musician's own amp, or taking the mixer output into broadcast gear that has no XLR input. The transformer also isolates the ground, which removes hum between two separately powered devices. If the direction is the other way, instrument to mixer, choose the BSS AR-133 or Palmer PAN-04A. If the distance is only a few steps, an adapter may be enough; ask us if in doubt.
What to consider when renting
XLR cable from the mixer output to the box input, and a jack cable from the box to the destination. No power is needed, the box is passive. Start with a low output level on the mixer and bring it up slowly, as consumer-level inputs overload easily. If it hums, use the ground lift switch. Hooking it up is simple, but listen for distortion while setting levels.
